Particularly in the field of intellectual property, mediation and other forms of dispute resolution can often lead to a faster, more cost-effective and confidential outcome than contentious proceedings. They also allow for creative solutions that a court would not be able to impose.

Mediation & ADR for Our Clients
Whether it concerns a trademark opposition, a patent dispute or a design conflict, we assess whether an amicable solution – for example through mediation – may be the better approach and support you as your patent attorneys throughout the entire process.
This applies to mediations before the EUIPO Mediation Centre, the new Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC) of the Unified Patent Court, as well as proceedings before other national and international institutions.
A recent example from our practice: In December 2025, we were able to resolve a total of 26 pending trademark proceedings between the parties for one of our clients within a single mediation before the EUIPO – confidentially, by mutual agreement and within just a few weeks.
Mediation is particularly suitable where:
- an existing business relationship is to be preserved,
- parallel proceedings are pending in several countries,
- saving time and costs compared with contentious proceedings is a priority, or
- confidentiality is of particular importance to your business.
Coexistence & Delimitation Agreements
Many disputes – particularly in trademark opposition proceedings – can also be resolved amicably without involving a mediator. Carefully negotiated coexistence or delimitation agreements enable the parties to clearly define the respective scope of use of their rights.
Such agreements provide legal certainty, help avoid lengthy proceedings before intellectual property offices and are a well-established tool for dispute prevention in our day-to-day practice.
Independent Mediation of IP Disputes
In addition to his work as a patent attorney and partner at our firm, Dietrich Blumenröhr acts as a mediator in the field of intellectual property – in both German and English. In his role as mediator, he is neutral and equally committed to all parties involved. He acts independently of his legal practice and does not represent any of the parties to the mediation.

As a member of the ECTA Mediation Committee, Dietrich Blumenröhr contributes to the further development and promotion of alternative dispute resolution in European trademark law.
The Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC) is the mediation and arbitration centre of the Unified Patent Court, with locations in Ljubljana and Lisbon. It provides parties with a structured and confidential framework for the alternative resolution of patent disputes – both in connection with pending UPC proceedings and independently of court proceedings.
As a patent attorney with a technical background and many years of experience in intellectual property law, Dietrich Blumenröhr has a thorough understanding of the legal, technical and commercial dimensions of IP disputes. This enables him to guide even complex patent, trademark and technology-related conflicts with the necessary subject-matter expertise and to support the parties in developing sustainable solutions that reflect their respective interests.
